Voltaire Exile From France.
Voltaire was beaten, imprisoned and then forced in to exiled from his home land because he expressed a freedom of speech and wrote a letter that a nobleman found offensive. This shows his dedication to standing up for civil liberties.
"In 1726, when a young nobleman of the Rohan family took offence to Voltaire's' writing, he had him beaten then imprisoned in Bastille, to be released only if he promised to leave France. So Voltaire took up residence in England for three years where he was welcomed by many literary figures of the day and attended many of the plays of William Shakespeare."
